Falcons' SAAC teams up with Fitchburg community to support families of Haiti
FITCHBURG, Mass. (January 29, 2010) - The Fitchburg State athletic department and the Fitchburg community will be teaming up this Saturday as Falcon athletics joins the emergency relief and recovery efforts for the country of Haiti.

On January 12th, a series of earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 6.5 to 7.3 devastated the country of Haiti. In the process, several Fitchburg State students were greatly affected as the quakes touched their homes, their lives and their family members. As a result, Fitchburg State College has come together for a show of caring as ribbons symbolizing the colors of the Haitian flag and the sentiment of hope will be worn.
In conjunction with Fitchburg State's Haitian Relief efforts, members of the Falcons' Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be distributing ribbons to all Falcon fans who attend this Saturday's ice hockey contest. The Falcons will hit the ice in search of their eighth consecutive victory as they host the Panthers of Plymouth State University at 4 p.m.
"This is an issue that has struck close to home for a number of our student-athletes," said Senior Women's Administrator, Michelle Walsh. "This initiative really came from our student athletes and I continue to be impressed with the depth of concern that they demonstrate for community members in need."
All proceeds from the gate will be donated to the college's Haitian Relief fund, aiding the families' affected by this unfortunate natural disaster. ALL Falcon fans are encouraged to attend this Saturday's contest to help support the cause, while enjoying some great hockey action.
In addition, people can donate in support of the relief effort in Haiti at www.redcross.org or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS. Mobile donors can text "Haiti" to 90999 to make a $10 contribution. A $10 donation made through mobile giving can provide a family with two water cans to store clean drinking water, basic first aid supplies or a blanket appropriate to the climate.
