Falcons' Trio Earns MASCAC Player Of The Week Honors
Callahan and Suprenant named Field Athlete of the Week; Riggs tabbed Ice Hockey Player of the Week
FITCHBURG, Mass. (January 21, 2010) - Fitchburg State earned three MASCAC Player of the Week awards this week as senior Kyle Callahan (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham), classmate Lindsay Suprenant (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) and junior Chris Riggs (Sewell, N.J./Fort Vancouver Pioneers) were honored by the league in their respective sports.
Callahan collects his second consecutive MASCAC Field Athlete of the Week honor after bettering his Division III New England qualifying mark in the high jump (6', 1.25") with a first place finish at the MIT Coed Invitational. Callahan added to his outstanding performance, posting a sixth place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 40 feet, 2.25 inches.
Joining Callahan on the MASCAC's Field Athlete of the Week list was senior captain Lindsay Suprenant. Suprenant sparked the Fitchburg State women's track and field team at the MIT Invitational, qualifying for the New England Division III Championships in weight throw with a personal best throw of 43 feet, 3 inches. The veteran thrower took first place for the Falcons in the weight, while adding a sixth place effort in shot put (30', 5.75").
Rounding out the Falcons' trio of award winners was junior forward Chris Riggs. Riggs brought in his first weekly honor of the season after leading Fitchburg State to a perfect 2-0 week with a pair of goals and three assists. He lifted the Falcons to a 5-4 overtime victory at Salem State with a marker and two helpers, while tallying and setting up score in 8-4 triumph at Westfield State.
The Fitchburg State ice hockey team (11-3-1, 7-2-0 MASCAC) is in search of its seventh straight victory as it visits Worcester State College on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The Falcons men's and women's indoor track teams will be in action on Friday and Saturday as they travel to Boston University for an All-Division Meet.
