Intramural Sports

Intramural Sports at Fitchburg State College offers something for everyone, ranging from one-day events to 6-week leagues.  We are constantly striving to meet the needs of our campus community by providing a variety of activities to participate in.

We offer team events, individual events and leisure events.  Entry forms need to be filled out online for each event at http://fsc.dosportseasy.com.  Regardless of your skill level we want you to have a good time.

Eligibility

Intramural Sport activities are open to all current students, faculty and staff of Fitchburg State College.

Captains Meetings

For most events, each team captain (or a team representative) will be invited to attend a captains meeting for that sport. At this meeting rules, policies and procedures (both game rules and administrative details) will be discussed. In addition, each captain will receive a handbook to assist them with any questions they may have throughout the season.

Event Capsules

Soccer

With twenty-three teams participating last year, this is proving to be one of the most popular intramural activities. Play will begin September 19 and conclude on or near October 20.  In order to provide an adequate amount of programming we will continue to play on a smaller field, with games played across Elliot Field.  This allows for a more fast-paced game and for each player to be more involved, since it will be played with five players and a goalie per team.

Ultimate Frisbee

With fifteen teams participating last year, this is quickly becoming a popular tradition on campus.  Play will begin September 19 and conclude on or near October 20. Much like the version everyone played as a kid, a team consists of six players and the purpose is to get the Frisbee across your goal line. You are only allowed to take three steps once you have gained control of the Frisbee and the other team is allowed to block your throw from an arm’s length distance.  Players have five (counted out loud) seconds in order to get rid of the Frisbee before it is turned over to the other team.  Like Soccer, the games are played at Elliot Field, running perpendicular to the football field.

Pickleball

Last year was the inaugural year for the sport at Fitchburg State, with 46 people signing up.  Last year we were only able to offer a doubles tournament.  This year we will have both singles and doubles in a league format, followed by playoffs.  Last year we played in the racquetball courts, but this year we'll be able to play in the gymnasium as intended.  Pickleball is basically mini-tennis played with table tennis scoring.  We'll have four courts going at once with seating for your friends to watch (be sure they bring their One Cards).

Softball

Softball games take place at the McKay Field located next to the McKay School.  Play will begin September 20 and conclude on or around October 21.  If you’re looking for a late afternoon/early evening activity, this is great as we’re at the mercy of the sun.  The game is played in 7 innings and has a 3 out rule per inning for each team. Ten players are required to participate for each team, though you are allowed to play with a minimum of eight players on the field without being penalized.  Come together with your team for a chance to meet new people and have some fun!

Team Handball

This will be the first year that we're offering this sport, but you may have seen it played in the Summer Olympics.  Play begins September 21st, played on Tuesday & Thursday nights.  It will be played in the Rec Center gym on a basketball court.  Players can shoot beyond the 3-point line into a goal defended by the other team.  Much like basketball, there are five players to a team, with quick-paced action full of strategy!
