Intramural Sports

Intramural Sports at Fitchburg State University offers something for everyone, ranging from one-day events to 6-week leagues.  We are constantly striving to meet the needs of our campus community by providing a variety of activities to participate in.

We offer team events, individual events and leisure events.  Entry forms need to be filled out online for each event at www.imleagues.com/fitchburgstate.  Regardless of your skill level we want you to have a good time.

Eligibility

Intramural Sport activities are open to all current students, faculty and staff of Fitchburg State University.

Captains Meetings

For most events, each team captain (or a team representative) will be invited to attend a captains meeting for that sport. At this meeting rules, policies and procedures (both game rules and administrative details) will be discussed. In addition, each captain will receive a handbook to assist them with any questions they may have throughout the season.

2012 Spring Semester

Broomball

One of our most popular events last year, this game is played on the ice surface at Gaetz Arena.  The game is basically floor hockey played with plastic 'brooms' instead of hockey sticks.  As you can imagine, there tends to be some slipping, so helmets are provided for your use.  Games willbe played on Sunday & Tuesday nights starting January 29th.

 Wallyball

We're hoping to grow on the thirty-one (31) teams we had sign up last year.  Wallyball is a combination of volleyball and racquetball played inside a racquetball court.  Games are competetive and very fun.  Games are 2-on-2, so go out and find a partner!  Play begins Sunday, January 29th!

Water Polo

With few people thinking it sounds like fun to get into their swimsuits in January, this ranks first among the "I wish I had signed up for that" list!  Once people see how much fun it is, they want to jump in.  We play only in the shallow end, so you don't need a lot of swimming experience.  We have new goals this year that will bring all the action down to the water level.  Action gets underway January 30th.

Table Tennis

The past three years we've had more than 50 people participate in our table tennis activities.  We plan to see even more this year!  Each player will be put into a pod, where they will play 3 matches in 1 night.  After pod play is done, we will take the top 32 players and form a single-elimination tournament, similar to the World Cup soccer format.  All games will be played in the dance studio at the Rec Center, with play beginning January 30th.  The tournament will be held once pod play is complete, likely the last week of February or the first week in March.

Decathlon

While not a decathlon in the most traditional sense, this will be much more fun!  Our ten events will be: Darts, Billiards, 2-mile Run, Basketball Shooting, 400-yard swim (with fins), Wiffleball Home Run Contest, Sorry (the board game), Table Tennis, Ladder Golf & Bowling!  The event will be held Thursday, March 1st through Sunday, March 4th.  Get ready for a great weekend!

Sports Trivia

This will be our first jump into Sports Trivia.  The event will be held Tuesday, March 20th in the Rec Center.

Flag Football

Arguably our most popular activity, with twenty-four (24) teams playing last year.  This should be another great season.  We will play 5-on-5 on a short field for some high-flying action.  Play will begin Sunday, March 25th at Elliot Field.

Indoor Soccer

If you're a fan of Futsal, you'll enjoy this!  To learn more, this may help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=74MEdLMrXAQ&NR=1.  This will be our first attempt with Indoor Soccer and we expect a lot of enthusiasm for the sport.  Play is 5-on-5 including the goalie, with play contained to one basketball court (no sideboards).  Success will depend on your ability to control and move the ball quickly.  Play begins Sunday, March 25th.  Good luck!

Team Handball

We were excited to see sixteen (16) teams sign up last year!  You may have seen it played in the Summer Olympics.  It will be played in the Rec Center gym on a basketball court.  Players can shoot beyond the 3-point line into a goal defended by the other team.  Much like basketball, there are five players to a team, with quick-paced action full of strategy!  Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPgnRff5EVg.  Play will begin Sunday, March 25th.

Wiffleball

Play will be held in the Rec Center gym this year.  We'll have a short tournament beginning Monday, April 30th.

Home Run Derby

This is another brand new activity this year.  The event will be held under the lights at Elliot Field the week of Monday, April 30th.  We'll provide softball bats and balls for the event.  The exact layout will depend upon the number of entries, but this will likely be played over at least a two-day period.

Mini-Triathlon

With fifty (50) people participating last year, we continue to see more and more people come out for this event.  We hold the run, bike and swim in the Rec Center.  The distance for each leg is small, so it is reasonable for an individual to do all three legs on their own.  Teams can be made up of one to three people, but only one person can participate in each leg.  This year's event will take place Sunday, May 6th!
