LAUREN WUNDT |
FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 6, 2009) - Fitchburg State named seven athletes to the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) All-Conference men's soccer, women's soccer and cross country teams this past week.
Senior Lauren Wundt (Southwick, Mass./Southwick-Tolland) heads the list of Falcon award winners, earning her fourth consecutive All-Conference honor, while classmate Megan Belanger (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown), junior Lionso Ventura (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont) and senior Patrick Higgins (Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) collected All-Conference second team accolades. Rounding out the Fitchburg State award winners were junior Matt Spano (Gardner, Mass./Gardner), senior Kyle Schaeffer (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) and sophomore Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine/Morse) of the men's cross country team.
Wundt earns her second-career All-Conference first team honor after leading the Fitchburg State women's soccer team with 19 points (6 goals, 7 assists) this season. Wundt finished her standout, four-year career with Fitchburg State, ranking first all time with 99 points, 42 goals and 16 assists. In addition to her career achievements, Wundt also etched her name in the single season records books, totaling program marks in single season goals (15) and points (33) during her junior campaign.
LIONSO VENTURA |
Also representing the Fitchburg State women's soccer team is three-time award winner, Megan Belanger. Belanger, a two-time captain for the Falcons, was named the MASCAC All-Conference second team for her stellar defensive play and strong leadership abilities. Throughout her career, Belanger served as the backbone of the Fitchburg State defense, appearing 67 career contests with eight total points.
On the men's side, Lionso Ventura registered his second career honor after earning an All-Conference second team nomination last season. This year, Ventura ranked first on the Falcons soccer squad with 18 points, posting a team-high eight goals and two assists. He finished eighth in scoring among MASCAC leaders, while ranking fifth overall in goals scored.
Joining Ventura on the 2009 men's soccer All-Conference second team is senior captain Pat Higgins. Higgins sparked the Falcons defense throughout the season, serving a primary role on the back-line. This season, Higgins witnessed career-highs in games played, games started and points, while aiding a stingy Falcons defense that limited opponents to only 1.72 goals per game.
On the tracks, junior Matt Spano earns his second consecutive All-Conference award after leading the Fitchburg State cross country team to a second place finish at the MASCAC Championships. Spano was the Falcons' top finisher, placing sixth overall with a time of 27:14. Schaeffer and Kibler also turned in top performances at the conference meet, earning All-Conference honors with a seventh and eighth place finish respectively. Schaeffer completed the 8K layout with a time of 27:20, while Kibler notched a 27:27 run.
