Fitchburg State Rolls Past Anna Maria, 73-49

Torres nets a game-high 27 points in Falcons victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. (December 11, 2008) - Senior Brian Torres (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton Rehoboth) continued his hot-shooting with a game-high 27 points and four boards to lead Fitchburg State to a 73-49 victory over Anna Maria College this evening.

Torres shot a solid 45.0% from the field (9-of-20 shooting) to lead the Falcons, knocking down 5-of-11 shots from three point range and 4-of-6 shots from the free throw stripe. Junior Jonathan Evans (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) was also strong for Fitchburg State with eight points on 3-of-5 shooting, while seniors Jeff Kozik (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) and Brian Skiffington (North Adams, Mass./Hoosac Valley) added seven points apiece.

Junior Colin Purdon (Putnam, Conn./Putnam) led the Anna Maria attack with a team-high ten points and two boards, while shooting 3-of-5 from the field and 2-of-4 from beyond the arc. Senior Henry Rose (Coventry, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) collected eight points for the Amcats, while sophomore Tyler Washington (Milford, Mass./Milford) chipped in with five points and four rebounds.

Fitchburg State grabbed an early 21 point lead (40-19) at the end of the first half led by the sharp-shooting of Torres. The Falcons opened their scoring surge with an early 17-8 lead, as Torres connected for nine points in the first eight minutes of the match. The Green and Yellow closed the half just as strong with a 20-3 run as Torres notched 19 points by the break.

In the second half, Fitchburg State continued its momentum, extending its lead to 28 points (59-31) midway through the frame. Evans ignited the Falcons rally with back-to-back three pointers early in the half, while Torres added eight points to close out the night.

Fitchburg State (4-3, 0-0 MASCAC) will travel to Western New England College on Saturday at 1 p.m. Anna Maria (2-7, 0-0 TCCC) is off until after the new year when it participates in the Wesleyan Tournament vs. Daniel Webster on January 2nd.
