Worcester State Cruises Past Fitchburg State, 75-64

Skiffington and London combine for 22 points in Falcons setback

WORCESTER, Mass. (February 10, 2009) - Senior Brian Skiffington (North Adams, Mass./Hoosac Valley) and junior Colin London (Worcester, Mass./Doherty) combined for 22 points as Fitchburg State endured a tough 75-64 setback to Worcester State College in MASCAC action this evening.

Skiffington and London led the Fitchburg State attack with 11 points apiece, while senior Jeff Kozik (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) added ten points and four rebounds. Junior Tim Graham (Arlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) registered seven points and four boards, while sophomore Elliot Knower (Templeton, Mass./Narragansett) and senior Brian Torres (North Dighton, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) chipped in with six points apiece.

Worcester State freshman Raheem Lewis (Whitinsville, Mass./Sutton) led all scorers with a game-high 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor, while junior Maurice Horton (Detroit, Mich./Burncoat) collected 12 points, five rebounds and five assists. Junior Elijah Sims (Worcester, Mass./Sumpter) chipped in with 11 points and seven caroms for the Lancers.

Worcester State opened the first half with an 11-4 run and continue its offensive pressure, taking a 38-28 lead at intermission. Sims led the Lancers 53.6% first half shooting attack with eight points on 3-of-6 shooting, while London netted nine points for the Falcons.

In the second half, Worcester State opened its lead to 23 points (59-36) as the Lancers tallied a 16-7 run midway through the frame. Horton connected for five points in the rally, while Sims drained a dagger from beyond the arc. Fitchburg State rallied late in the contest, scoring 13 unanswered points, but the Falcons' comeback was short-lived as Worcester State held on for its 12th victory of the season.     

Fitchburg State (7-13, 1-8 MASCAC) will be in action again on Saturday as it hosts Salem State College at 3 p.m. Worcester State (12-11, 5-5 MASCAC) will host Bridgewater State on Saturday at 6 p.m.
