Vets leads Falcons with two points in first collegiate start
FITCHBURG, Mass. (November 7, 2009) - The Fitchburg State ice hockey team opened its 2009 season in convincing fashion, defeating Franklin Pierce University, 3-0 in non-conference action this evening.

Fitchburg State received a solid effort from freshman John Vets (Hamden, Conn./Hartford Jr. Wolfpack) who totaled two points on one goal and one assist, while classmate Justin Quinn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) and senior captain Andrew Hutton (Brewster, Mass./Boston Harbor Wolves) added one goal apiece.
The Falcons came out soaring early in the first period as Hutton netted his first goal of the season just 6:50 into the contest. Senior Chris Brecken (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) set up Fitchburg State's first score of the game, slipping the puck to the net from the outside and letting Hutton tip it home to give the Falcons the early 1-0 edge.
Fitchburg State continued its offensive surge moments later as Quinn connected for his first collegiate goal at the 10:11 mark. Playing shorthanded, the Falcons grabbed its 2-0 lead as Quinn found himself one-on-one with Raven goaltender Ben Ziok (Holden, Mass./St. John's) following a crisp pass from classmate John Vets. Vets padded the Fitchburg State lead early in the second period with an unassisted marker for his first score of the season.
Junior Robert Vorse (Leominster, Mass./Bay State Breakers) paced the Falcons defensively, kicking off the 2009 season with 15 stops for the complete-game shutout. Fitchburg State dominated the offensive front, posting 34 shots on net, including 17 in the second period. Ziok was solid between the pipes for the Ravens, stopping 31 shots throughout the contest.
Fitchburg State (1-0-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action next weekend as it hosts the IC Credit Union Shootout Classic on Friday and Saturday evening. Franklin Pierce (1-1-0, 0-0-0 NE-10) will visit Wentworth on Monday at 7 p.m.
