Fitchburg State Posts 5-3 Comeback Over UMass Dartmouth

Quinn continues hot shooting with second pair of markers in as many games

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (December 12, 2009) - The Fitchburg State ice hockey team won its third consecutive contest as the Falcons collected four unanswered, third-period goals to defeat UMass Dartmouth, 5-3 in MASCAC action this afternoon.

JUSTIN QUINN

Freshman Justin Quinn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) continued his hot shooting, registering a pair of goals for the Falcons, while junior Chris Riggs (Sewell, N.J./Fort Vancouver Pioneers) and sophomore Kris Threlkeld (Centerville, Ohio/CD Selects) tallied one score and one helper each. Newcomer Kevin McCready (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Mohawk CC) chipped in with one marker as well, while senior captain Andrew Hutton (Brewster, Mass./Boston Harbor Wolves) paced the Falcons with two assists.

Fitchburg State registered its fourth conference victory in comeback fashion, overcoming a 3-1 deficit early in the third period. Trailing by two after a Giancarlo Capodanno (Mountainside, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) goal at the 1:12 mark, the Falcons offense hit stride as Quinn opened Fitchburg State's four goal flurry with his second score of the contest.

McCready followed suit for the Falcons just 2:24 later off a Trevor Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass./New England Jr. Huskies) feed, while Threlkeld gave Fitchburg State its first lead of the contest with his fourth score of the season at the 17:49 mark. With both teams at even strength, Threlkeld found the back of the net with assists from Hutton and Riggs for the eventual game-winner, while Riggs added the Falcons fifth score of the game with five second remaining in regulation to ice the victory.

UMass Dartmouth held a slim 38-32 advantage in shots, while Fitchburg State played clean hockey with only one penalty all contest. Junior goaltender Robert Vorse (Leominster, Mass./Bay State Breakers) was stellar between the pipes, stopping 35 shots in the complete game win, while Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, Mass./Springfield Jr. Falcons) stopped 27 shots for the hosts.
