Fitchburg State Downs Competition At Tufts Stampede
Falcons roll into MASCAC/Alliance meet on high-note
BOSTON, Mass. (February 6, 2010) - The Fitchburg State men's and women's indoor track team raced solidly this weekend as the Falcons visited the Tufts Stampede hosted by Tufts University.

On the men's side, the Falcons used a throwing attack as junior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) collected a pair of first place finishes. Muolo finished first in the weight throw with a toss of 15.90m (52-2), qualifying for DIII New England's, ECACs, and the All New England's, while tallying top honors in the shot put with a DIII and ECAC qualifying distance of 14.72m (48-1).
Adding to the great day of throws for Fitchburg State was senior Brandon Jean (Dunstable, Mass./Dunstable), who tossed 43-5.75 feet in the weight, and sophomore Paul Taddeo (Bellingham, Mass./Bellingham), who notched a personal best toss of 43-2.5. In the shot put, freshman Tony Viccaro (East Hampton, Conn./East Hampton) hit a personal best mark of 41-1, taking home a seventh place finish.
The Falcon men also had a great day sprinting and running as newcomer Julian Stakley (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) finished second overall in the 55m dash with a 6.61 time. Stakley also qualified for the DIIIs, All New England's and ECAC's with a 6.55 trial run and placed second in the 200m at 23.18.
Senior Devon Jennings (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) joined Stakley on the track, finishing fifth overall in the 55m dash with a DIII time of 6.66, while sophomore Mike Iasevoli (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) notched a time of 23.27 in the 200m sprint. The men's 4x200 relay team (Jennings, Callahan, Iasevoli, De La Rosa) also placed well, taking in top honors with an ECAC qualifying time of 1:33.23.
Rounding out the men's performance from the weekend was senior Kyle Callahan (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) who competed is his first collegiate pentathlon. Callahan was sensational, qualifying for DIIIs and ECACs with 3,104 points. He notched his highest point total (811) in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.71, while posting 689 points in the 1000m run (2:57.47).
On the ladies side, senior Lindsay Suprenant (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) continues to shine as she totaled a second place finish weight throw with a distance of 13.02m (42-8.75). Suprenant was joined by freshman Shanissa Sampson (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) with a toss of 35-6.75, while classmate Megan Gonzalez (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) threw a personal best 34 feet in the shot put.
Sophomore Madeline Merchant (Gardner, Mass./Monty Tech) also had a strong outing for the Falcons, finishing third overall in the 55m dash with a time of 7.63. Merchant also legged a portion of the women's 4x200 relay (Merchant, Landry, Taupier and Marrone), leading Fitchburg State to fifth placing showing at a season-best, DIII time of 1:55.87 season best.
Merchant also qualified in the long-jump (15-7) and 55m dash (7.63 - 3rd), while freshman Emily Lane (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) also ran well, posting a time of 9.55 in the 55m hurdles. Lane also finished the high-jump in second place (DIII), while junior Erin Abbott (Warwick, Mass./Pioneer Valley) jumped 4-11.
The Fitchburg State men's and women's track team will be in action next weekend as it competes at the MASCAC/Alliance Championships on Saturday afternoon.
