Ridge nets a team-high 14 to propel Falcons to fifth victory of the season

FITCHBURG, Mass. (December 6, 2008) - Junior Michelle Ridge (Milton, Mass./Milton) collected a team-high 14 points to lead the Falcons to a 79-69 victory over Rivier College in non-conference action this afternoon.

Ridge led the Falcons, shooting 5-of-7 from the field, including 4-of-6 from three point range. Senior Stephanie Payette (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex) put together another strong performance, notching 12 points and eight rebounds, while junior Kari Averill (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) and sophomore Kim Duprey (Bernardston, Mass./Pioneer Valley) each added 11.

Senior captain Justine Nims (Weare, N.H../John Stark) registered a game-high 24 points for Rivier, while junior Blair Carpenter (Meredith, N.H./Interlakes) recorded 14 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Kelsey LaRose (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) chipped in with ten points for the Raiders.

Fitchburg State opened the contest with an early nine point advantage as the Falcons posted a 38-29 lead at the half. Ridge led the Falcons with nine first half points, shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from three point range. The Falcons lead grew as large as 16 points in the frame as Ridge and Payette combined for 18 points, but the Raiders closed the gap in the closing minutes with a 13-6 run.

The Falcons exploded for 14 unanswered points to open the second half, taking 52-29 lead just four minutes into the period. Averill led the charge with two three-pointers, while Ridge connected for a shot beyond the arc and a lay-up. The Falcons grabbed a 30 point lead midway through the frame, but the Raiders battled back, cutting the Falcon lead to ten with 1:26 remaining. Fitchburg State held off the late Raiders surge, holding Rivier scoreless for the final 47 seconds.

Fitchburg State (5-3, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Wednesday as it battles Western New England College at 7 p.m. Rivier (5-3, 0-0 GNAC) will host Newbury College tomorrow at 1 p.m.
