Medaille Inches Past Fitchburg State, 53-52

Proffitt nets a game-high 20 points in Falcons first loss of the season

BEVERLY, Mass. (November 20, 2009) - Junior Melissa Proffitt (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) led Fitchburg State with her first double-double of the season, but the Falcons fell to Medaille College, 53-52 in day one of the Endicott College tournament.

Proffitt paced the Fitchburg State offense with a game-high 20 points and ten rebounds, shooting 7-of-13 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the charity stripe. Sophomore Rebecca Goreham (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) added to the mix with ten points, six boards, four steals and four assists, while junior Molly Maloney (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) added eight points.

Sophomore Meghan Dougherty (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols) led the Medaille offense, totaling a team-best 15 points on 6-of-15 shooting, while Amanda Sahhar (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) registered ten points and eight boards. Freshman Susanne Black (Houghton, N.Y./Fillmore) was also solid with a game-high nine rebounds and four points for  the Mavericks.

The Falcons collected a slim 26-24 lead at the break, using a pair of 7-2 runs throughout the half. Fitchburg State went up by as much as seven in the period as Goreham and Kim Duprey's (Bernardston, Mass./Pioneer Valley) netted seven points apiece, but Medaille answered Fitchburg State's scoring with several runs of their own, including a 4-0 span to close the half.

In the second half, Fitchburg State continued its offensive prowess, notching a 9-2 run in the opening minutes to gain a 35-26 advantage. The Falcons maintained a ten point lead at the 8:12 mark of the second period, but Medaille answered once again, outscoring Fitchburg State 16-6 over the next four minutes to knot the game at 50-50.

After two minutes of scoreless play, Fitchburg State broke the scoring silence with a jumper by Proffitt, but Medaille bounced right back with a three-point play by Dougherty as the sophomore guard converted a lay-up and free-throw to give the Maverick a one point edge. Fitchburg State created a trio of attempts on the final series of the game as Proffitt and senior Kari Averill (Barre, Vt./Spaulding) brought in a set of offensive rebounds, but the Falcon could not cash in as time expired.     

Fitchburg State (1-1, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Sunday as battles Endicott College at 1 p.m. Medaille (3-0, 0-0 AMCC) will face Endicott tomorrow at 1 p.m.
