Rhode Island Cruises Past Fitchburg State 71-53

Love sparks Falcons in non-conference tilt with six points and six boards off bench

FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 2, 2010)- The Fitchburg State women's basketball team suffered its second straight setback this evening, falling to Rhode Island College 71-53 in non-conference action.

Junior Molly Maloney (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) led all Fitchburg State scorers with a team-best ten points, shooting 4-of-10 from the field and 2-of-4 from three point range. Classmate Kelley Rogers (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) and sophomore Rebecca Goreham (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) both added eight points to the mix, while junior Kristen Love (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) notched six points and six boards off the bench.

Rhode Island senior Stephanie Coro (N. Providence, R.I./N. Providence) led all scorers, posting a game-high 20 points on 8-of-19 shooting from the floor, while senior Alice Mullen (Saunderstown, R.I./S. Kingstown) totaled 14 points off the bench with 4-of-5 shooting from long range. Sophomore Rachel Riley (Coventry, R.I./Coventry) also notched double-figures for the Anchormen with 12 points and six rebounds.

Rhode Island applied pressure to the Fitchburg State offense from the get-go as the Anchormen caused seven Falcon turnovers in the opening six minutes to grab an eight point advantage. Senior Denise Scott (Yonkers, N.Y./Yonkers) sparked the Anchormen with four steals and six points in the run, while Coro nailed the first shot of the game from long range.

The Anchormen went up by as much as 20 late in the first half, but Fitchburg State rallied back, closing the Rhode Island lead to only 11 at the break (40-29). The Falcons used a 7-0 run over the final 3:32 to stay within striking distance as junior Melissa Proffitt (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional), senior Kari Averill (Barre, Vt./Spaulding)and Rogers each totaled a pair of points.

In the second half, Rhode Island ended the Fitchburg State momentum as the Anchormen notched an 18-4 run over the first ten minutes to grab a commanding 25 point lead. Coro led ten, second-half, Rhode Island scorers with nine points in the frame, while Lauren Harrington (Exeter, R.I./West Greenwich) added five and two rebounds.       

Fitchburg State (9-11, 3-4 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it travels to Bridgewater State College at 1 p.m. Rhode Island (13-7, 4-5 LEC) will host Keene State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
