Fitchburg State Downed By Simmons, 68-63

Maloney nets team-high 19 points in non-conference tilt

BOSTON, Mass. (December 3, 2009) - The Fitchburg State women's basketball team suffered a tough, non-conference fall to Simmons College this evening, as the Sharks defeated the Falcons, 68-63 at the Holmes Sports Center.

Sophomore guard Jessica Thomas (East Sandwich, Mass.) led the Simmons offensive front, posting a game-high 20 points, hitting 5-of-10 from the field and 4-of-7 from three point range. Senior forward Stephanie Fox (West Springfield, Mass.) was also strong for the Sharks, collecting a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds while classmate Julianna Eagles (Quincy, Mass.) added 15 points of her own.

The Falcons received a solid effort from junior guard Molly Maloney (Taunton, Mass./Taunton), who posted a team-best 19 points and 8 rebounds, while classmate Kelley Rogers (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) followed closely with 16 points and four boards. Sophomore Rebecca Goreham (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) led Fitchburg State in the post, tallying a team-high ten caroms.

Simmons controlled the first half tempo, shooting 45.8% from the field and 54.5% from downtown to collect a 13 point lead at the break. Thomas led the Sharks first half dominance with 16 of her 20 points in the period while Fox also netted eight. Simmons came out gunning right from the gate, opening the contest with a 14-5 run. The Sharks went up by as much as 16 in the period, using eight points off turnovers and nine second chance points in the process.  

After the break, Fitchburg State battled back, outscoring Simmons 37-29 in the frame, The Falcons strung together a nice 10-3 run over the final two minutes of play, but fell five points short of a dramatic 16-point comeback. Rogers led the Falcons second half attack with 11 points and four rebounds, while Maloney registered ten, including a three-point shot at the buzzer.

Fitchburg State (2-4, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Tuesday as it hosts Western New England College at 7 p.m. Simmons (4-2, 0-0 GNAC) will also be in action on Tuesday as it hosts UMass Dartmouth at 7 p.m.
