Fitchburg State Rebounds At UMass Boston, 52-44

Rogers leads all scorers with a game-high 13 points and six boards

BOSTON, Mass. (November 24, 2009) - The Fitchburg State women's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak as the Falcons defeated UMass Boston, 52-44 in non-conference action this evening.

Junior Kelly Rogers (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) led all scorers, posting a game-high 13 points, six rebounds and four assists for Fitchburg State, while classmates Kim Duprey (Bernardston, Mass./Pioneer Valley) and Melissa Proffitt (Hubbardston, Mass./Quabbin Regional) each netted 12 points apiece. Proffitt was also solid on the boards with five caroms, while sophomore Rebecca Goreham (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) tallied a team-high, seven.

UMass Boston received a solid effort from Caroline Ashe (West Roxbury, Mass./Mount Alvernia) who collected a double-double on the evening with 12 points and ten rebounds. Kristen Penney (West Roxbury, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) added ten points and five boards for the Beacons while Cammy Brown (Malden, Mass/Malden) chipped in with seven.

Fitchburg State used a tenacious defensive attack early in the first half, scoring 15 points off turnovers to grab a 12 point lead at the break. The Falcons offense got going midway through the half as Fitchburg State closed the period with an eight minute, 14-2 run. Duprey led the Falcons offense with nine points on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc, while Proffitt hit 4-of-5 from the field for eight points.

Fitchburg State increased its lead throughout the second period, taking a 44-28 advantage with 8:26 remaining in the game. UMass Boston responded however with a 16-5 run, fueled by a pair of three-pointers off the bench from freshman guard Michaela Cunningham (South Boston, Mass./Fontbonne Academy), to pull the Beacons to within five (49-44) with 50 seconds left in the game. The Falcons held off the Beacon comeback however, as Rogers connected on four consecutive free-throws in the closing seconds.

Fitchburg State (2-2, 0-0 MASCAC) will be in action again next Tuesday as it travels to Nichols College at 7:00 p.m. UMass Boston (1-2, 0-0 LEC) will travel to the Hilton Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday to battle Medgar Evers at 5 p.m.
