Southern Maine Downs Fitchburg State 11-3

Brown collects 12 saves despite non-conference setback

FITCHBURG, Mass. (April 1, 2010) – The Fitchburg State women’s lacrosse team dropped its second consecutive contest this afternoon, falling to the University of Southern Maine, 11-3 in non-conference action.

Junior Jess Martineau (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) scored a game-high five points on four goals and one assist to lead Southern Maine, while freshman Haley Jordan (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) netted three scores. Junior Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, Maine/Pomfret School) was also strong in the contest, aiding the Huskies attack with two goals and two dishes

Sophomore Amanda Burns (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) led the Fitchburg State offense with two of the Falcons three goals, while senior Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) collected a goal and one assist. 

The Huskies jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening 23 minutes to take the early command.  Jordan had two goals in the rally while Martineau added a goal and an assist on the first score of the game. Burns broke the string of USM goals converting a free-position opportunity with 1:54 to play in the half, but the Huskies closed out the first half with a  four goal advantage (5-1).

In the second half, Swan and Burns rallied the troops, scoring a pair of goals in the first ten minutes of play, but Martineau swung the momentum back in favor of the home side scoring her second goal of the game just 33 seconds after Burns' score. Jordan and Martineau added a trio of markers over the next eight minutes to push the advantage to 9-3, while rookie Shelby Turcotte (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) added to the lead with 9:44 to play.

Freshman Samantha Kiesel (Lakeville, Mass./Kents Hill) and junior Rachel Lolley (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) split the goaltending chores for Southern Maine, combining for eights save in the contest, while freshman Abbie Brown (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) had a strong game for the Falcons with 12 stops.

Fitchburg State (5-4, 1-1 NEWLA) will be back in action on Thursday as it travels to Castleton State at 6 p.m. Southern Maine (4-4, 0-0 LEC) will host Bates College tomorrow at 4 p.m.
