Fitchburg State Holds On Against Salem State, 13-11
White gives Falcons third NEWLA victory with a game-high six tallies
SALEM, Mass. (April 7, 2012) – The Fitchburg State women's lacrosse team registered its third New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) victory of the season as it held on to defeat Salem State University, 13-11 this afternoon.
Fitchburg State jumped out to an early 7-3 lead behind two goals each from junior Jessica Bartlett (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) and freshman Lindsey White (Hanover, Mass./Hanover), but Salem State would rattle off six unanswered goals to take a 9-7 lead into halftime. Senior Kaitlyn Shidler (Peabody, Mass.) and Kate Warren (Sandwich, Mass.) led the Viking charge with three goals apiece in the half.
In a back and forth second half, the Falcons grabbed the final lead of the half, breaking an 11-11 tie with just under five minutes remaining in the game. White connected for the final two Fitchburg State scores, finish with a game-high six goals in the game. Bartlett was also solid with four tallies on the afternoon.
Salem State received a strong offensive output from Shidler who finished with four goals and one assist, while Warren added a pair of helpers to her three goal total on the day. Junior Bridgett Dullea (Peabody, Mass.) also finished the game with three goals for the Vikings.
For the contest, Salem State outshot Fitchburg State 37-31 while also using a 22-14 groundball advantage to control the game's tempo. Sophomore goalkeeper Dylana Drolette (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) was stellar in net for the Falcons, making 14 saves in the complete game victory, while Salem State freshman goalie Molly Blewett made ten stops for the hosts.
Fitchburg State (5-5, 3-1 NEWLA) will be back in action on Tuesday as it travels to Curry College at 6:30 p.m. Salem State (5-2, 2-1 NEWLA) will visit Becker College on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
