Fitchburg State Takes Down Salem State, 4-1
Jamieson nets a pair in Falcons first MASCAC victory of the year
SALEM, Mass. (September 17, 2011) – The Fitchburg State women's soccer team opened its 2011 league play this afternoon, defeating the Vikings of Salem State University, 4-1 at Alumni Field.
The victory gave Fitchburg State its fifth win (5-1, 1-0 MASCAC) of the season, while Salem State dropped to 3-3 on the year (0-1 MASCAC).
Fitchburg State opened the scoring early in the game as sophomore Rachel Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) hit home for her team-leading seventh goal of the season off a feed from fellow line-mate, Carissa Kennedy (Somerset, Mass./Bishop Stang). The Falcons added another score before the end of the half as freshman Kayla Philbrick (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee Comp.) deposited her shot in the corner of the net for a 2-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Fitchburg State's third goal came early in the period when Salem State's Veronica Porier attempted to clear the ball and it went off the goalpost into the back of the net. Jamieson was credited the goal for Fitchburg State.
Holding a 3-0 lead midway through the third period, Fitchburg State sealed its first conference victory of the year as freshman Kayla Bridges (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) took a Sarah Haley (Holbrook, Mass./Holbrook) feed and converted her first collegiate goal. Salem State's Katelyn Krish (Rockland, Mass.) scored the team's only goal in the 77th minute.
Despite being outshot 18-9 in the contest, Fitchburg State made the most of its opportunities, converting four of its seven attempts on net. Salem State goaltender Leah Potcner (Wilmington, Mass.) had three saves in the loss for the Vikings, while sophomore Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) made eight saves for the Falcons.
Fitchburg State (5-1, 1-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it hosts UMass Boston at 7 p.m. Salem State (3-3, 0-1 MASCAC) is set to host Southern Maine on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
